    Gas-Granular Simulation Framework for Spacecraft Landing Plume-Surface Interaction and Debris Transport Analysis

    The Gas-Granular Flow Solver (GGFS) multi-phase flow computational framework has been developed to enable simulations of particle flows complex extra-terrestrial regolith materials. Particle flows of interest include the damage of unprepared landing sites from rocket plume impingement on Moon, Mars, and asteroids. The flow solver implements an Eulerian-Eulerian two-fluid model with fluid representation of the gas phase and granular phase to avoid the need to model billions of particle interactions. The granular phase is modeled as an Eulerian fluid with constituent physics closure models derived from first-principle Discrete Element Model (DEM) particle interaction simulations that capture the complex, non-linear granular particle interaction effects. Granular phase constituent models have been developed and integrated that address the complex, non-linear granular material mechanics complexities resulting from both: the irregular, jagged particle shapes and poly-disperse mixture effects encountered in extra-terrestrial regolith, with lunar regolith as the extreme. The GGFS capabilities are being integrated into a proven NASA plume-surface interaction and debris transport simulation framework featuring the Loci/CHEM CFD program and Debris Transport Analysis (DTA) post-processing tools for applications in robotic and human Moon and Mars lander development. Integration of the three simulation tool components. Loci/CHEM, GGFS, and DTA, into a coordinated simulation framework will enable time-accurate spacecraft landing simulations that account for the alteration of the landing surface through plume-induced cratering and the resulting redirection of plume impingement flow and debris transport. Initial implementation of this simulation framework and application examples will be presented

    Space Shuttle Propulsion Systems Plume Modeling and Simulation for the Lift-Off Computational Fluid Dynamics Model

    This paper details advances being made in the development of Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes numerical simulation tools, models, and methods for the integrated Space Shuttle Vehicle at launch. The conceptual model and modeling approach described includes the development of multiple computational models to appropriately analyze the potential debris transport for critical debris sources at Lift-Off. The conceptual model described herein involves the integration of propulsion analysis for the nozzle/plume flow with the overall 3D vehicle flowfield at Lift-Off. Debris Transport Analyses are being performed using the Shuttle Lift-Off models to assess the risk to the vehicle from Lift-Off debris and appropriately prioritized mitigation of potential debris sources to continue to reduce vehicle risk. These integrated simulations are being used to evaluate plume-induced debris environments where the multi-plume interactions with the launch facility can potentially accelerate debris particles toward the vehicle

    AEROELASTIC SIMULATION TOOL FOR INFLATABLE BALLUTE AEROCAPTURE

    A multidisciplinary analysis tool is under development for predicting the impact of aeroelastic effects on the functionality of inflatable ballute aeroassist vehicles in both the continuum and rarefied flow regimes. High-fidelity modules for continuum and rarefied aerodynamics, structural dynamics, heat transfer, and computational grid deformation are coupled in an integrated multi-physics, multi-disciplinary computing environment. This flexible and extensible approach allows the integration of state-of-the-art, stand-alone NASA and industry leading continuum and rarefied flow solvers and structural analysis codes into a computing environment in which the modules can run concurrently with synchronized data transfer. Coupled fluid-structure continuum flow demonstrations were conducted on a clamped ballute configuration. The feasibility of implementing a DSMC flow solver in the simulation framework was demonstrated, and loosely coupled rarefied flow aeroelastic demonstrations were performed. A NASA and industry technology survey identified CFD, DSMC and structural analysis codes capable of modeling non-linear shape and material response of thin-film inflated aeroshells. The simulation technology will find direct and immediate applications with NASA and industry in ongoing aerocapture technology development programs

    Coupled Simulation of CFD and Flight Mechanics with a Two-Species-Gas-Model for the Hot Staging of a Multistage Rocket

    The hot staging dynamics of a multistage rocket is studied using the coupled simulation of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Flight Mechanics (FM). In the coupled simulations, the free-stream is modeled as “cold air” and the exhausted plume from the continuing-stage-motor is modeled with an equivalent calorically-perfect-gas that approximates the properties of the plume at the nozzle exit. The Navier-Stokes equations in the coupled simulations are time-accurately solved in moving system, with which the Flight Mechanics equations can be fully coupled. The Chimera mesh technique is utilized to deal with the relative motions of the separated stages. A few representative staging cases with different initial flight conditions of the rocket are studied with the coupled simulation. Based on the simulation results, the staging dynamics of the rocket are finally analyzed
